"A Simple, Clear Answer for our Hope"
I Peter 3: 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. I Peter 2: 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
Hebrews 6: 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. 6:1 Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so.

1. What is that we are to be prepared for, besides Christ's return? What attitudes ought we develop in our preparation?

3. Why is the Bible so powerful, even in its most simple verses?
4. How can you be prepared to give an answer to hope that lies within you? You can be a teacher of the Gospel of Jesus! In the next few days, let's learn an easy and simple and clear way to do that!

3. What did God make? Was God alone when He made it? Who else was present? How many Gods are there?

I John 3:1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
I John 4: 7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
There are 104 references in the NIV Bible with "God" and "love" contained in the same verse! I didn't count, but I estimate that 65-70% of the verses encourages us to "love God." The other verses describe the "God" who "loves."
Three types of love are defined in the Scriptures:
1. BROTHERLY LOVE (phileo) A concept, which appears throughout the Bible, but the specific word for this type love, appears only in the New Testament. (Rom. 12:10; 1 Thess. 4:9; Heb. 13:1; 1 Pet. 1:22; 2 Pet. 1:7).
2. LUST - "Sexual Love" (eros) In contemporary usage, a strong craving or desire, especially sexual desire.
3. AGAPE LOVE (agape) Unselfish, loyal, and benevolent concern for the well-being of another. In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul described "love" as a "more excellent way" than tongues or even preaching. The New Testament maintains this estimation of love throughout. The King James Version uses the word charity instead of "love" to translate the Greek word Paul used.
Grace: "God's undeserved, unconditional love toward the sinner."

I Peter 1: 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade--kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

Life as Seen by the "Next Generation" They make up the population of the 11th largest nation - some 80 million strong. Their generation has no heros or name that they call their own. Others call them "busters," "Xers," or "slackers." One student of that generation came up with 18 Key Words that describe the generation. Lonely - Alone We will take a look at them individually over the next 18 days. ALONE or LONELY "The human race is not alone in the universe....I am not alone."(Richard E. Byrd) "It is strange to be known so universally and yet to be so lonely."(Albert Einstein) Genesis 2:18 Then the Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him." Luke 9:18And it came about that while He was praying alone, the disciples were with Him... John 14: 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

"DISENFRANCHISED." - to deprive of a franchise, of a legal right, or of some privilege or immunity; to deprive of the right to vote.
Here is a word we don't use much in our everyday language. It means "to deprive a privilege, a right or power." It reminds me of Adam and Eve who were DISENFRANCHISED from the Garden by God for their disobedience. Also, the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant in Matthew 18:23-35 is an experience of being DISENFRANCHISED. The story in the Old Testament of the Israelites in the period of the Babylonian Captivity is another experience of being DISENFRANCHISED. The period of slavery in the United States is a period of African Americans being DISENFRANCHISED from their rights and privileges.
This is a prescription to prevent anyone of being DISENFRANCHISED:
"He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?"(Micah 6:8)
Exodus 22: 21 "Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt. 22 "Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan. 23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.
Leviticus 19: 32 "'Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the LORD. 33 "'When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. 34 The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the LORD your God. 35 "'Do not use dishonest standards when measuring length, weight or quantity. 36 Use honest scales and honest weights, an honest ephah and an honest hin. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt. 37 "'Keep all my decrees and all my laws and follow them. I am the LORD.'"
Psalm 146: 5 Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God, 6 the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them-- the LORD, who remains faithful forever. 7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free, 8 the LORD gives sight to the blind, the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down, the LORD loves the righteous. 9 The LORD watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.
John 8: 31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." 33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" 34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

"Survivors." - There is the perception that the opportunities for the future are not as bright as their parents' futures. They survived conception; birth; bad economy; bad ecology; bad politics.
The third word(of the 17) that characterize the Generation X is: SURVIVORS
Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs, from his book Motivation and Personality, urges that before a person can even consider moving toward his own vision of excellence he first has to be assured of the physical needs for SURVIVAL: food, air, sleep, water, shelter. Then he has to feel secure from illness and danger. Next, he needs a sense of belongingness---acceptance, affection, understanding. Next a sense of esteem, pride, self-respect, status. And having assured all those needs, he can then move toward achieving his full potential.

"The more we exploit nature, the more our options are reduced, until we have only one: to fight for survival." (Morris Udall)
We are survivors because we place our trust in God. "The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want....Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. I will fear no evil...."
Zechariah 10: 9 Though I scatter them among the peoples, yet in distant lands they will remember me. They and their children will survive, and they will return. 10 I will bring them back from Egypt and gather them from Assyria. I will bring them to Gilead and Lebanon, and there will not be room enough for them. 11 They will pass through the sea of trouble; the surging sea will be subdued and all the depths of the Nile will dry up. Assyria's pride will be brought down and Egypt's scepter will pass away. 12 I will strengthen them in the LORD and in his name they will walk," declares the LORD.
Matthew 24: 20 Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now--and never to be equaled again. 22 If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.
Luke 13: 13:1 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them--do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."
II Chronicles 7: 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
Psalm 116:1 I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. 2 Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live. 3 The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came upon me; I was overcome by trouble and sorrow. 4 Then I called on the name of the LORD: "O LORD, save me!"
Lamentations 53 They tried to end my life in a pit and threw stones at me; 54 the waters closed over my head, and I thought I was about to be cut off. 55 I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit. 56 You heard my plea: "Do not close your ears to my cry for relief." 57 You came near when I called you, and you said, "Do not fear." 58 O Lord, you took up my case; you redeemed my life.

"PAIN" - Internal, hidden pain of rejection, loneliness, disappointment is often masked by the external adornment of "pain" in the form of multiple body piercings, tattoos, and other body scarings.
Suffering and pain is the direct result of sin into God's perfect creation. Our first parents rebelled against God and His Will for their lives and the result was pain and suffering.
The 4th word(of the 17)that characterize the Generation X is: PAIN
Can you get into PAIN? Most of us have very little problem with relating, more or less, to PAIN. "No PAIN, no gain", we say. PAIN is integral to life, from the very beginning at birth when the infant baby cries to the final days of death, a human being never escapes the reality of PAIN. "In PAIN you shall bring forth children," writes Genesis 3:16. As Morris West writes in his book, Shoes of the Fisherman, "One has to accept PAIN as a condition of existence." We can talk about the degrees and forms of PAIN, but the real test is how we cope with whatever type and intensity of PAIN we experience during the various stages of our physical, mental and spiritual life. Here is an interesting quote from David Black: "PAIN is an energy monster; we give it the power to hurt us. And we can take that power away---depending on how we choose to view ourselves. All PAIN is real, but you can change your reality." Remember the words of Job, the biblical expert on PAIN, "...I rejoice in unsparing PAIN, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One."(Job 6:10). Here is another interesting biblical perspective from Ecclesiastes 1:18, "Because in much wisdom there is much grief, and increasing knowledge results in increasing PAIN."
Genesis 3: 16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." 17 To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return."
I Peter 2: 16 Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. 17 Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king. 18 Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. 19 For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God. 20 But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. 21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
Matthew 4: 23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24 News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and he healed them.

"Anxious." - characterized by extreme uneasiness of mind or brooding fear about some contingency: worried.
I don't know of any generation that could not be characterized by this word. Anxiety seems to be characteristic of every period of human history. However, certain cultures are more anxious than others, and certain personalities reflect more anxiety than others.
"Up to a certain point anxiety is good, for it promotes action. Beyond that point we freeze any fixed attitudes or rush about without thinking deeply from one decision to another." (Jules Henry)
"For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious your life,...And which of you by being anxious can add a single cubit to his life's span?...But seek first His(God's) kingdom and His righteousness...Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

An anonymous writer states his thoughts on anxiety this way:
"Every tomorrow has two handles. We can take hold of it by the handle of anxiety or by the handle of faith."
Deuteronomy 28: 62 You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky will be left but few in number, because you did not obey the LORD your God. 63 Just as it pleased the LORD to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please him to ruin and destroy you. You will be uprooted from the land you are entering to possess. 64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other. There you will worship other gods--gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have known. 65 Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place for the sole of your foot. There the LORD will give you an anxious mind, eyes weary with longing, and a despairing heart. 66 You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life.
Psalm 139: 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Proverbs 12: 25 An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.
Ecclesiastes 2: 21 For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then he must leave all he owns to someone who has not worked for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. 22 What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun? 23 All his days his work is pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is meaningless.

"Cynical." - This generation has been let down by its elders. They believe that everything must be "fixed" - the economy, the ecology, the political system, etc. Trust in leaders is not taken for granted, it must be earned. Webster's says, "cynical implies having a sneering disbelief in the sincerity of integrity." Another definition: contemptuously distrustful of human nature and motives.
CYNICAL is the sixth of the 17 words that characterize the Generation X (young adults born between 1961 and 1981). A cynic is "one who believes that only selfishness motivates human actions."
Kenneth Clark writes: "We can destroy ourselves by cynicism and disillusion just as effectively as by bombs."
Ralph Waldo Emerson writes: "Don't be a cynic and bewail and bemoan. Omit the negative propositions. Don't waste yourself in rejection, nor bark against the bad, but chant the beauty of the good."
Amen! "And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good."(Genesis 1:31).
Malachi 2: 17 You have wearied the LORD with your words. "How have we wearied him?" you ask. By saying, "All who do evil are good in the eyes of the LORD, and he is pleased with them" or "Where is the God of justice?"
Matthew 15: 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." 28 "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."
29 "Come," he said. "Fear." - an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger. alarm, panic, terror, fright, - fear is the general term, while anxiety accompanies fear with a usual loss of courage or boldness to confront the emminent danger.
FEAR is the seventh (of the 17) word that characterizes Generation X.
"To live with fear and not be afraid is the final test of maturity." (Edward Weeks)
"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself...which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance." (Franklin D. Roosevelt)
Psalm 27:1,3 "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?...
Though a host encamp against me, my heart will not fear;
Though war arise against me, in spite of this I shall be confident."
Matthew 10:31 "Do not fear for you are of more value than many sparrows."
Luke 12: 4 "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.
Romans 13: 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? "Diverse." - The word for the day is DIVERSE, the 8th word that characterizes the Generation X.

Margaret Mead writes: "If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities, and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each DIVERSE human gift will find a fitting place."
"There are no elements so DIVERSE that they cannot be joined in the heart of a man." (Jean Giraudoux)
Romans 12:5-6 "For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. And since we have gifts that DIFFER according to the grace given to us, let each exercise them accordingly..."
Jeremiah 29: 11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you," declares the LORD, "and will bring you back from captivity. "Relational." - One of the most success television sitcoms aimed at the "next" generation is Friends: a loose band of friends that live and play with each other devoid of parental guidance or direction.
Psalm 67: 4 Sing to God, sing praise to his name, extol him who rides on the clouds -- his name is the LORD-- and rejoice before him. 5 A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. 6 God sets the lonely in families, he leads forth the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.
John 15: 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last. "Team." - This generation, more than the one before, works together well and more efficiently as a team.
Ecclesiastes 4: 7 Again I saw something meaningless under the sun: 8 There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. "For whom am I toiling," he asked, "and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?" This too is meaningless-- a miserable business! 9 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: 10 If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! 11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. 13 Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to take warning.
I Corinthians 12: 12 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. Risk-Taker" - The Next Generation sees much of life as a risk-taking proposition. If they commit themselves in a life-long relationship of marriage, will their selection as a mate remain faithful or not? Stock market trading, temp working, relationships, marriage, life, all is seen as a risk to be taken.Matthew 10: 38 and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 40 "He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me. 41 Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward."
Mathew 16: 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

"Practical." - There are all kinds of "pulls" from every direction that would want us to be practical.
The 12th characteristic of Generation X is PRACTICAL. It is written of the Generation X that "...they are pragmatic almost to a fault and... more prepared to get on with what needs to be done than to ask why it needs to be done."(Dr. Stanley Menking). They would identify with the words of Jesus who said, "Whoever does not receive you, or heed your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake off the dust of your feet and move on."(Matthew 10:14). Good advice for the PRACTICAL in life are the words of Thomas Fuller: "A mariner must have his eye upon the rocks and sands, as well as upon the North Star."
Take a look at how Jesus defines what is REALLY practical...
Matthew 6: 24 "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. 25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ? 28 "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Luke 9: 57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." 58 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." 59 He said to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." 60 Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God." 61 Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my family." 62 Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."
Luke 10: 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.' 36 "Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" 37 The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." John 4: 6 Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?" 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."

"Immediate." - Raised with McDonald's instant "Speedy" burgers, and the competitive edge of Burger King, advertizing that "you can have it your own way..." this generation has never conceived of a tv without a remote control, autos without electric windows, music without "Walkmans." Life is immediate and fleeting. Life NOW is much more important than planning for the future. Will there be a future for me? Better to have "whatever" NOW than be disappointed by later.
Isaiah 49: 8 This is what the LORD says: "In the time of my favor I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will help you; I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land and to reassign its desolate inheritances,
II Corinthians 6 As God's fellow workers we urge you not to receive God's grace in vain. 2 For he says, "In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you." I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation.
Acts 16: 29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" 31 They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved-you and your household." 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God-he and his whole family.
Luke 2: 36 There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.
Matthew 4: 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Matthew 21: 18 Early in the morning, as he was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it,
"May you never bear fruit again!" Immediately the tree withered. 20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. "How did the fig tree wither so quickly?" they asked. 21 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."Luke 8: 42As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.

"Multi-Sensory." - The "Next" Generation has learned to use the remote control on the TV to "surf" through the stations to gather information very quickly, but not on a linear plane. For those of us who are older, this is incomprehensible, but for the "next" generation, it is natural. Deuteronomy 29:1 These are the terms of the covenant the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb. 2 Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them: Your eyes have seen all that the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials and to all his land. 3 With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those miraculous signs and great wonders. 4 But to this day the LORD has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear. 5 During the forty years that I led you through the desert, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet. 6 You ate no bread and drank no wine or other fermented drink. I did this so that you might know that I am the LORD your God. Job 42:1 Then Job replied to the LORD: 2 "I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted. 3 You asked, 'Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge?' Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. 4 "You said, 'Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me.' 5 My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. 6 Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes." Isaiah 6: 9 He said, "Go and tell this people: "'Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.' 10 Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed." 11 Then I said, "For how long, O Lord?" And he answered: "Until the cities lie ruined and without inhabitant, until the houses are left deserted and the fields ruined and ravaged, 12 until the LORD has sent everyone far away and the land is utterly forsaken. Isaiah 32: 1 See, a king will reign in righteousness and rulers will rule with justice. 2 Each man will be like a shelter from the wind and a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in the desert and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land. 3 Then the eyes of those who see will no longer be closed, and the ears of those who hear will listen. Isaiah 35: 4 say to those with fearful hearts, "Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you." 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. "Real." - This generation has grown up with artificial everything: tupperware, plastic car bumpers, disposable diapers, disposable marriages and lives, instant food, instant lives, instant histories - but much is unreal, artificial. The search is for reality and genuine value.
II Corinthians 4: 4 Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; 5 in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; 6 in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; 7 in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; 8 through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; 9 known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; 10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything. 11 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you. 12 We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. 13 As a fair exchange--I speak as to my children--open wide your hearts also.
Philippians 2: 19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. 20 I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare. 21 For everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel. 23 I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me.
I Peter 1: 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! "Searching." - Every generation searches for values, direction, limits, and mores. This generation as well is searching. Can you offer them the right information and direct them in their search?
Psalm 139 : 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Proverbs 2: 1 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, 3 and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.

Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.
